The Hybrid Entity
Site-specific performance
Willem Twee Kunstruimte, Den Bosch, 2025
In his work, Wessel Verrijt explores the boundary between the “living” and the “non-living,” seeking to soften this often rigid divide and create new connections between the two. By combining sculpture and performance, Verrijt creates “hybrid entities” in which performers and sculptures merge, transforming static materials into active participants.
The performance is characterized by slow, repetitive movements, with the hybrid entities carefully sensing and responding to their environment. The interaction between the sculptures and the performers’ extended limbs evokes everyday behaviors, emotions, rituals, and forms of interaction. Each sculpture assumes its own role, defined by its specific possibilities and limitations.
At Willem Twee Kunstruimte, The Hybrid Entity unfolds as a unique landscape in which Verrijt releases sculpture from its static role. The work occupies the space in a way that invites visitors to walk around it, observe, return, and rediscover it again and again.
